Patrol Officers

ProfessionalStops

The majority of Police Operations personnel are uniformed officers serving in patrol teams, with each team comprised of several officers and a sergeant. These officers are the most visible face of the Eugene Police Department. Citizens who report crimes in progress or are involved in traffic crashes that require police response will likely interact with a police officer. EPD’s dedicated, professional police officers provide round-the-clock police response to the City, working to maintain a safe community. They respond to police calls for service, conduct preliminary investigations, and work to prevent crime and improve neighborhoods. These highly trained men and women strive to serve every community member they contact with fairness and respect.

Special Operations Support

While regular patrol teams handle typical calls for service and crime prevention activities, sometimes more specialized units are needed.  A number of these focused units are organized under the Special Operations (Ops) Section of the Patrol Division.  Special Ops includes units to which officers are assigned full-time, such as the:

  • Crisis Negotiation Team
  • Crowd Control Team
  • Explosive Disposal Team
  • Drone Team
  • K-9 Unit
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team
  • Traffic Safety Unit

The specialized units are activated as needed.  The Special Operations Section is commanded by a Police Lieutenant who reports to the Patrol Division captain.  The section employs about 25 sworn officers and two civilian administrative aides full-time, but dozens of officers with regular duties as patrol officers or detective also serve on Special Operations ad hoc teams.
