1. Can I have an outdoor fire in a fire pit or fire ring in my backyard?

You can have a backyard fire within the city limits of Eugene for the purposes of preparing food only. Backyard fires are prohibited per City code 6.200. If you are within the urban growth boundary but not within the city limits, check with Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority at 541-736-1056 or with your local fire district.

2. How does the minimum Gallons per Minutes at fire hydrants work and who's in charge?

Required water flow for fire hydrants is determined by the size of the building and the construction type. Requests for fire hydrant flow information need to be made to the EWEB Water Division at 541-685-7326 or FAX 541-685-7326 Attention: Water Division Operations. Code requirements are available in Appendix B of the Fire Code (OFC).

3. Will I need to sprinkler my new building/house?

The requirements for fire suppression systems in a single family dwelling are determined by the size of the home, the available water supply at the street and the relative ease of access for the fire department to the house. The requirement for sprinkler systems for commercial buildings are found in the Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC).

4. What will my Fire fees be for my permit? Sprinklers? Alarms?

Fees assessed for fire permits are found in the Construction and Development Fee Schedule.

5. What do you look at during the Fire inspection?

The inspections can vary depending upon the scope of the project.

Typical items inspected are:

• Checking for proper installation and function of the fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems
• Fire extinguisher placement
• Address visible from exterior of building
• Lock box placement
• Other issues depending upon scope of permit

7. Do I really need to submit a complete Hazardous Materials Inventory Sheet (HMIS)?

If requested, a complete Hazardous Materials Inventory Sheets (HMIS) is needed. Without complete information about the types and quantities of hazardous materials the plan reviews cannot be completed and your permit cannot be issued.

8. How high can storage be stacked without needing sprinklers? With sprinklers?

You can stack items between 6 -12 feet high depending upon the product and the building construction. There are circumstances where a building has a sprinkler system and high-piled storage is still not allowed. If you have questions you should check with your sprinkler contractor or contact the Deputy Fire Marshal at 541-682-5086.

9. Where can I get a copy of the Yellow Book (Fire Protection System Design, Installation & Maintenance Guide0?

The Yellow Book can be ordered through Oregon Fire Marshal's Association . The order form must be completed and mailed with a check.
